How to write your blog

1.0 Content guidelines

Guidelines have been established to ensure that all communications written on behalf of/in reference to GLOCCRIN are standardised, follow best practices, promote key messages and raise the profile of the network.

1.1 Blogs

Blogs should be authentic content, written in the first person. Blogs can be written by academics, professional staff, research students, and any of our network partners. The tone of voice for blog content may vary depending on the subject – e.g. blog about social life may be more personal and informal than a research entry from an academic.

If you would like to pitch an idea for a blog, please email gloccrin@leedstrinity.ac.uk and the team will be able to discuss these with you in more detail.

1.2 What makes a good blog

Before writing a blog, you need to decide on your topic. Choose something that you are interested in (whether it’s of academic, professional, or personal interest), and something that you have an opinion on.

Once you have decided on your topic and are confident in your standpoint, you need to:

• Identify your audience;

• Consider a writing style and tone appropriate for your audience and subject;

• Choose relevant images that relate to the subject.

1.3 How to write a blog

The main criteria for blogs require that they are authentic and written in the first person – as an individual or contributing author. Although written in the first person, the content will be published on the GLOCCRIN website and therefore needs to be mindful of the network’s key messages, members, local community, and partners.

Each blog must include at least one image. Original images do not infringe copyright, however, if you are using images from another source, you need permission from the owner, and you will need to credit them. Images should be high resolution where possible, and intrusive/obstructing filters should not be used. The first image used should be landscape. Additional images can also be used. These can be landscapes or portraits.

The recommended word count for blog posts is between 400 and 600 words. This can be adapted if necessary.

Blog content should be sent to the coordinator at gloccrin@leedstrinity.ac.uk for approval and will then be uploaded onto the GLOCCRIN website.
